"You killed your plane / It touched back down / And I felt insane / When I asked where you’d been"
Reveal Party, the moniker / project of the ever revelatory Danish artist Emily Nyhuus re-shaped her track "You Skip My Turn" from her debut EP ‘You Stole a Year of My Life’ and stirred in the wonderful talents of another divergent Danish artist Brimheim (who I have also covered on AP). The pairing works like peanut butter and jelly and they share their hearts and minds about the project (contributed by the artists):
What is ‘You Skip My Turn’ about?
Reveal Party: »The song is about the feeling of not being good for another person. I tend to invest a lot of myself in other people and in the process I lose myself completely. When I lose a person like that it is extremely hard for me, ‘cause I feel that I’m also losing a big part of myself. To cope I often try to replace the person as soon as possible, fall in love again and become invested in them. It often ends up wrong, and in this type of situation I often ignore red flags, my own boundaries, and accidentally I overlook other’s boundaries too«.
Brimheim: »Emily is so good at articulating unrequited love and the bitterness you are left with after a break up. When I’ve listened to the song at home I’ve always been singing harmonies on top of the melodies, so it has been awesome to actually be able to do it on a recording!«
How is that expressed in the video?
Reveal Party: »The video is very direct in it’s representation of my experiences and my life. I’m chasing a beautiful woman without ever getting close to her, I’m running past a bunch of red flags, playing chess, writing a horrible love letter, getting milk poured over me, feeling humiliated. You know, everyday life.
How did you come up with the idea of collaborating?
Reveal Party: »Helena (Brimheim) is a good friend and we’ve talked a lot about the experiences that have inspired ‘You Skip My Turn’. So it felt natural for me to involve her. We had spoken earlier about collaborating because our music works well together in a lot of ways. It was fun to have Brimheim play the role of the person I’m desperately chasing, now that we’ve had so many conversations about that feeling and the negative consequences of it. Helena and her wife have had a positive impact on my life, ‘cause it’s so important to have queer respresentation around you. In the same way she’s a positive force for representation in the Danish music industry, and I have so much respect for her work«.
Brimheim: »When I heard Reveal Party’s debut EP the first time I was blown away. I love Emily’s vulnerability and the way that it coexists with her strong confidence. And I find it so inspiring how she uses her music as a vessel for empowerment. It’s a gift to be able to witness it. So when she asked me if I wanted to collaborate with her on this project it was a no brainer«.
Is there anything you would like to highlight from the video or the process around making it?
Reveal Party: »It was so exciting to work so DIY with a green screen and so on. It was also the first time the band was on set filming a music video, and I see that as another step in the direction of getting the band more involved and getting past the feeling that Reveal Party is a solo project. I think there’s room for Reveal Party to be a number of things as long as it’s honest. It’s exciting to have the band be more involved, as well as it is exciting to do stuff on your own. It’s not always easy to find that balance, but having the band in the video and as a part of the process is definitely an important step I think. So no matter how involved they are in the process of making the music, they are still a key part of the process that is Reveal Party«.
Love the video, by the way, so much. Check it out and support these lovely artists.

Emily Nyhuus, the woman behind the tongue-in-cheek name Reveal Party, writes songs about existing in a chaos of complicated emotions, and how one might have to cut them off completely when they become too hard to handle. »Cut your feelings, like me« is the quiet advice given on the opening track from her debut EP ‘You Stole a Year of My Life’, that established Reveal Party as one of the strongest new acts on the Danish music scene and gained praise and attention from both Danish and international media.
Reveal Party tells the story of the darkness and hopelessness that affected Emily during the year where she waited to receive hormone treatment so that her appearance would be in accordance with her identified gender. »They stole a year of my life, but I almost lost a lot more than that«, she says about the challenging time.
But Reveal Party is also the story of friendship, love and personal growth. Inspirations range from midwest emo to uplifting pop songs and therefore Reveal Party embodies the sound of both melancholy and hope. The common thread remains the gut-wrenchingly honest lyrics, Emily’s trembling yet determined voice and the ubiquitous ocean of distorted guitars.
