"mentally drained from our old archaic ways of keeping us in line....
The sound, the heavy ringing power of a pick against electric guitar strings through an amp turned up loud, chunky goodness, big down strikes as potent, exquisitely played drumming pounds away. That is how "Once Where We Walked" by Phoenix, Arizona based Ring Finger No Pinky starts out. It is a sound and aesthetic steeped both in classic rock and punk rebellion. These guys are young and want to punch you in the face with their sounds. Griffin Brown's vocal wail is dirty, gritty, perfect and for some reason (don't laugh) I flashed on an amalgam of Ryan James Jarman (The Cribs) and Joan Jett while absorbing his intense croon. That being said, Ring Finger No Pinky lyrically dig deeper than most:
"exhaling smoke, a burning planet / suffocation of my lungs / preoccupied by her light blue eyes / run your game of deceit / take my drag to hide the pain that they gave to me / self- righteous path is not one to take for the weary traveler"
"exhaling smoke, a burning planet / suffocation of my lungs / preoccupied by her light blue eyes / run your game of deceit / take my drag to hide the pain that they gave to me / self- righteous path is not one to take for the weary traveler"
Of the song, RFNP share:
"A self-reference to how people and ourselves want to address societal issues, but we're easily distracted with our own responsibilities and need for gratification."
AND I love that. They also are informed, influenced by bands like King Krule, Thee Oh Sees, Death Grips, and the Gorillaz, as opposed to, um, Imagine Dragons or The Foo Fighters. This makes me happy. I hope these boys keep it dirty and real and avoid those who want to produce the hell out of them.
