"the pendulum is swinging by / the world threatens to hypnotize..."
In many ways "in the black" by Brooklyn based Talk Bazaar, the musical project / moniker of Alex Desimine and from his recently released album "oceanic", has the overarching sense of tensing up, clenching your fists, of getting amped up for a confrontation, for a fight. You can feel it in the single guitar string and then the array of sounds that wrap around it as those notes shift in interesting ways. Desimine's vocal aesthetic, up front, hushed in what feels like an over-modulated stab right in your heart is trippy and potent, "the pendulum is swinging by / the world threatens to hypnotize / the only way to stay alive / remember to avert your eyes". Love the stalking beat and big droning bass sounds and the constant tension that Desimine manages with a light hand. In the end, it seems that "in the black" is more about not being played, not taking "the bait", averting or absorbing obstacles and passing through or around them without engaging, "just close your eyes / there’s no surprise in the black". The musical break coda with synth flourishes seems to go sideways in lovely ways. While I have not yet, I look forward to dipping into "oceanic", links below.
