Eamon McGrath and the blissful Americana movie that is "Cannonball" (featuring Cayley Thomas)

"I was seeing all the saints rise to the sky..."

"Cannonball" by Canadian singer-songwriter Eamon McGrath and from his upcoming full-length album "Bells of Hope" feels so inspiring and wistful, a sonic Americana movie that fills your soul with imagery. That imagery might involve bits of nostalgia, worn bell bottoms over more torn and tattered cowboy boots both road worn and blissfully wrinkled and rustic, kind of like McGrath's evocative voice itself. I love the sort of honkytonk sway, the 70's garden rock tones, country pedal steel lilt and the musical breaks that have a contemporary art pop divergence. McGrath is the ultimate storyteller and his wail bucks like a rodeo rider. Offsetting his vocal aesthetic, as a beautiful embracing counter point, is the painfully stunning vocal harmony of Edmonton based singer-songwriter Cayley Thomas. I am no producer, have no skin in the game but (damn) do I hope that Thomas graces other songs on "Bells of Hope" (just saying). I love this song.

With a series of singles from Eamon McGrath’s upcoming full-length album Bells of Hope that began last fall with “Sparkle & Bleed” and continued into spring of this year with the melancholic “April”, McGrath launches “Cannonball” this June to continue to offer a preview of what’s to come in the prolific output from this Toronto-based songwriter.

Featuring the immaculate and haunting voice of Edmonton-based singer/songwriter Cayley Thomas, “Cannonball” is an ode to some of McGrath’s most country-oriented influences, specifically the twangy psychedelia of Gram Parsons and Lee Hazlewood. Originally hailing from the Canadian prairies, the ghostly voices of classic Americana have played a hugely important role in the shaping of McGrath’s sound, as vital and formative as the more ragged and savage underground punk rock communities he long ago cut his teeth in.

“Cannonball” lands June 18 and will see McGrath heading west to Windsor, ON for a series of live in-person performances as part of The Gravy Train concert series on June 19, signaling McGrath’s long-awaited and welcome return to the road.
