Ryan Bourne and the crushingly poetic "Hopeless" (Official Video)

"all the ways of truth have eroded from my head..."

"Hopeless" by Calgary's Ryan Bourne has a great sound and darkly poetic aesthetic. Bourne who has ties to so many divergent musical outfits (Sleepkit, Chad Van Gaalen & the Bleach Wipes, Ghostkeeper, Holgans, Devonian Gardens, LEAKED and Extra Happy Ghost) has a way with melodies and possesses a vocal aesthetic that pulls you in by the collar for a tender sonic kiss but can punch you in the gut at the same time. I absolutely love the dirty sort of Fender Rhodes quality to the keys here and the cadence of the down strokes that feel like a 70's broad pop ballad by Harry Nilsson. Almost every word uttered is drenched with drama (mellow or mello) turned in social or relationship commentary. We all have lived during such tumultuous times, fucking crazy times and this one line just kills me:

"all the warring tribes of the masturbation age ripped the boiled tides with emancipated rage"

It sort of comes at you from all angles and maybe in some way asks us all to calm the fuck down and come together, find some touchstone of commonality and, well, find a way to get along. Yeah, I know that sounds cosmic, like some long gone hippie shit and for that, I apologize. When Bourne's beautifully somber coda / chorus comes in:

"please don’t say that it’s hopeless / please don’t let it be hopeless..."

It is so drenched in melancholia that if you are in a bad headspace, it could crush you but it is also amazingly beautiful like a gospel song asking for silver linings that are impossible to find. I felt a touch of Lennon at this point, I see John everyday on my wall after all. Great track.
