Rachel Croft and the classic subversive beauty of "Time Waits For No Man"

"five in the morning ain't no time to say goodbye..."

Listening to York (UK) based Rachel Croft on the story laden light indie rock ballad-esque "Time Waits For No Man" it feels so utterly classic for so many reasons. While the track goes from simmering to lovely ascensions, there is a level or restraint, beautiful restraint that feels very 70's and Crofts voice has the stellar textures and charisma of an iconic self aware seasoned songstress, in fact, in many ways I flashed on both Carly Simon and Linda Ronstadt (or maybe a sort of combination of both). The writing here is poised in pretty straight forward ways but is inventive, holds surprises and throws down, "I can save myself so fuck you Caroline."

In the end "Time Waits For No Man" is the kind of song that makes you want to know the back story. It also feels like the song and that back story would probably make one hell of a movie.
