Crush Bouquet and the alt rock deep emotional haze of "Spring"

"what if I choose this, what if I choose this..."

"Spring" by Crush Bouquet, the shoegaze alt rock project of Austin, Texas musicians Matthew Leger and Riley Sanchez is a moody piece of work. It has sharp edges sanded off with the haze it stirs up. The lyrics are pretty much indecipherable but the melodies pull at you in emotional ways. While you might feel something completely different, I felt a sense of somber reflection and confusion, punches in the air and holding onto oneself in frustration. Tonally there are grunge and stoner rock shapes but their are experimental rock shapes as well. Oddly enough or maybe not so oddly, I felt a sort of amalgam of artists like Sebadoh, Radiohead and Stone Temple Pilots on a barbiturate drip.

The nature of shoegaze is that you don't walk away from a story based on words as much as a feeling based on overall tone, texture and atmosphere. I love lyrics but there is a lot to get lost in here and the emotional tugs and pushes leave an impression. "Spring" is from the pair's debut EP, “Bri Will Be the Death of Me” and you can check it out on their Bandcamp.
