la loye and the sweeping, layered emotionalism of "white summer"

"I was left in a comfortable crowed telling me what I was all about, there are no words for me..."

The beautiful, reflective, shimmering and intimate "White Summer" by la loye, the musical project of 24 year old Dutch artist Lieke Heusinkveld feels so intimate and at time fragile that if feels like a wash of snowflakes that can be blown apart at any moment. Crafted on layers of guitar patterns and Lieke's tender, somber vocals, each time you listen you hear more personal bits and pieces of intimacy and you are pulled inward and outward at the same time. Lieke's aesthetic here is graceful and emotional, the song builds, amps up the expressions of feeling getting more sonically dense as it goes along and thankfully never boils over. In an understated way (I mean even la loye is framed in a lowercase manner) Lieke elevates the her art with grand emotionalism over bluster. Of the track Lieke shares:

"I’ve never really felt comfortable in summer. I can often feel very gloomy and melancholic during this particular time of the year and it always seems to create a distance between me and the rest of the world. As if everything is covered in a layer of thick white mist, making it difficult to connect with anything or anyone besides myself. On ‘white summer’ I’m sort of torn between trying to reconnect and accepting that this feeling might be a part of who I am."

I hope you take a dip into this artist's sound and even swim around diving deeper. You will not be disappointed.
