Sun Kin and the quaint whimsical folk caveat of "Doom Scroll"

"you and me / some toxic air / perfect day out..."

"Doom Scroll" by Sun Kin, the alt folk-esque pop indie project of Bombay born, Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, musician, producer Kabir Kumar, is a beautifully dreamy take on the perils of IG inforgraphic culture. The song full of charming whimsy and acerbic wit feels like a quaint foreign movie that rides on pop atmospheres blending in bits of bluegrass-ish folk streams and idyllic clarinet tones while gently reminding us that we don't need performative declarations at every turn. We just need to be real and open hearted. Maybe passing on an apple pie or Bombay ice halva between neighbors might be enough to save us all in the long run.

As Kabir shares

"The song was inspired by IG infographic culture, by the recent idea that we can find community simply by correctly diagnosing our friends and buying their goods and services; this mediation by tech companies and so-called experts meddling in our friendships and separating us even further from each other via dissection of every minute interaction."

This lovely sonic interaction features Kabir Kumar (guitar, vocals, Casio organ, bass, drum programming), Jesse Turits (banjo) and Maxime Stinnett (clarinet).

Sun Kin is the project of Los Angeles based producer Kabir Kumar. Born in Bombay, India and raised in five different countries, Kumar’s music is informed by the intimacy and audacious vulnerability that can only exist through learning to bond through transience. Kumar has been making music under the Sun Kin moniker for nearly a decade, starting from a psych folk project and adding in elements of electronic music, Bollywood, disco and R&B. Kumar’s whole life as an artist has been marked by momentum and migration. As they’ve homed in on their craft they’ve accumulated new sonic textures, new territories, and different modes of expression.
