"hands... soft and white for you..."
"Drones" by London (UK) art rock outfit Black Bordello with Sienna Bordello as the lead vocalist, guitarist, provocateur and mind bender is a weird and wonderful sonic creation. As fresh as it sounds, I could not help but step back and think of late 70's proto punk / art punk. "Drones" has a wide eyed theatrical outreach with the kind of carnival-esque broken baroque punk flourishes and penchant for veering into the surreal did make me think a wee bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees and even The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. The ride is wild, the musical shifts divergent and Sienna's vocal aesthetic is stunningly daring and avant garde. The drum downbeats like gun shots, the blazing horn sounds that feel like a bullfight from another dimension, the spy caper stair stepping obliqueness, the two tone punk rhythms and the midnight madness cinématique is flooding my mind with the oddest imagery. Drones, after all, in the wrong hands are as scary as fuck.
Black Bordello is further fleshed out by the talents of Henry Carpenter on Keys, Anthony Boatright on bass, Rachel Asafo-Agyei on BVs and Eddie Amos on drums. "Drones" crushes genres with top notch musicality and a feral / improvisational heart. I want to see it, could see it up on the big screen elevating a forward pushed eccentric movie. James Gunn are you listening to Black Bordello?
Oh, and the Official Video as directed by Lou Smith & Sienna Bordello is all that you would hope it to be.

Black Bordello are a 5 piece art rock project fronted by Sienna Bordello (lead vocals and guitar), with Henry Carpenter on Keys, Anthony Boatright on bass, Rachel Asafo-Agyei on BVs and Eddie Amos on drums. They released their debut album in July 2020 which was picked up by a number of great publications including Giglist, So Young, Fred Perry Subculture and an 8/10 review in Loud and Quiet which read 'Simply calling Black Bordello’s self-titled debut album “genre-defying” doesn’t do it justice. Their theatrical and lively live shows are often packed to the rafters, and they have made a name for themselves on the London gig circuit supporting artists such as The Rebel (Country Teasers) and Goat Girl and enjoy playing at their favourite venues such as the Windmill, the Shacklewell Arms and Moth Club. The band will released their single ‘Nunhead’ in summer 2021 and subsequent EP in autumn.
