Tethered Color and the tightly packed somber soul pop grooves of "Way Too Soon"

"I tried so hard to let go but it's way too soon..."

Tupelo, Mississippi's Tethered Color, the divergent musical project founded by Hayden Johnson in 2019, crafts soulful pop tunes. Take his latest "Way Too Soon", a rolling rumination on "feeling stuck in a relationship because you're afraid of change", that fuses a number of generational tones, textures and genres together opening surprising sonic doors. From the onset it pushes 60's driveway buttons, then falls into a psychedelic wash of 70's-ish soul pop (especially the vocal melody), I hear the textured brightness and pearly guitars that suggest lounge pop (I did think of Chicano Batman more than once). While all this goodness is going on, the words are colored in a somber way and the bridge break strips away into some sort of hallucinogen and then awakens like someone got out the smelling salts.

Very cool track with so many layers and tones to gleefully unpack.
