Remy Boccalatte and the dark moving beauty of "Kodama"

"the plains stretched a silence that spoke so uninhibitedly / humbled hay bales used as conjunctions.."

The Official Video for the cinematic "Kodama" by Brisbane, Australia based singer-songwriter Remy Boccalatte shows a snow laden forest in Japan, it's vegetation stripped by winter. Eventually, you see footsteps in the dense snow and faint glimpses of snow boarders navigating gracefully in and around the trees. The winter scenery, as beautiful as it is, has the harsh side. I live in the mountains and anyone who has lost power during a 17 degree snow storm knows how winter snow holds utter ethereal grace and deadly cold all at once.

Nature is complex as is the track "Kodama". The percolating acoustic guitar lines, sparse falling keys and somber strings contain beauty but a simmering anxiety too as Remy shares his pained poetry. His words are laid out as thoughts more than lyrics, there are not the typical rhymes but the words hold hands just the same. The song is moving and vague at the same time. Walls of emotions raise throughout. This is the stuff of conflict, a grand journey to behold.

The artist's press notes reveal a glimpse behind the curtain:

The first single from his sophomore concept album, Kodama is a fantastical journey of meeting a Japanese serow, who takes on personal qualities (a la Studio Ghibli), and repeated interactions while its surrounding environment changes through modernization and increased capitalism. Despite the initial naivety upon arrival, through the consistent meetings, a real understanding of the repercussions comes to light. The whole album is a reflection on personal growth, while Kodama expresses a desire to understand the unspoken discourse so evident around us.

Recorded at False Peak Records' Base Camp and mixed by Ryan Strathie (who also played drums- Holy Holy), and features the string arrangement by Canadian multi-instrumentalist Claire Stevenson. Mastered by Matt Redlich (Ball Park Music/ Holy Holy/ Husky).
