Okay Alright and the emotional everything of "nothingness"












"this song is really about nothing at all or should I say the nothingness of it all"

The rambling nature of  "nothingness" by Okay Alright and the rustic feel of the rapid folk picking, maybe even more than rustic, maybe scratched and torn (as if the guitar sounds comes from a wobbly 16 millimeter film) gives this song a curious sound. Maybe less than nostalgic or vintage but surreal or fabulistic. The quick bumping patter and stream of words that meander beautifully about loneliness and the fragile connection between people, even strangers, that can feel potently deep is sadly reflective. The refrain "this song is really about nothing at all or should I say the nothingness of it all" feels alone somehow in and of itself and reminds us how we can feel all alone together. 

Okay Alright says that the song is "a happy sad song about depression and observing the world from the outside" and whether we feel on the outside looking in or in the inside looking out either sensation can feel either comfortable or dreadfully terrifying depending on our mental state. And maybe the very worst thing is to feel alone in the middle of a huge party full of people celebrating. In the end, "nothingness" is emotionally complex and feels crushingly sad and serenely like a love song but the kind of love that if lost could be the end of everything, and ay there's the rub. 

Okay Alright is Bryce, a 21 year old musician and mental health worker from Chicago currently living in LA. and "nothingness" was coproduced by Runnner (Noah W) and Florist (Rick S). More to come.
