Emmrose and the hollow ghosts who lurk in "The Gallows"

"I was by myself / Walking down park avenue / Then I’m overwhelmed / Must be cursed to always run into you..."

Step into the dream pop / bedroom pop emotional orchestrations of "The Gallows" and you are floating in the youthful haunted world of past ghosts, past loves, past scars and Emmrose, the moniker of far reaching eighteen year old singer songwriter Emma Torrison, draws you in with relatable feelings and in incredible voice singing tenderly broken melodies. The song is drawn from a real place as she shares:

"I was walking down a street in NYC, saw my ex-boyfriend holding hands with a girl, and it was not even a busy street, right by a park. It was just that moment that the song was born, because of the way he walked right by me, with no real acknowledgment, and seemed to give me a glare while passing by."

Informing her lyrics:

“I was by myself / Walking down Park Avenue / Then I’m overwhelmed / Must be cursed to always run into you”

“Was I wrong to expect / An ounce of civility / Guess you moved on / Is that your girlfriend sure she’s real pretty”

She shares further:

"My favorite line in the song is the second verse, “I’m just tired / of being ignored / by old lovers / who can't stand the scars.” I love the visual of having these real marks on someone, a metaphorical 'scar' or a 'bruise' in my lyrics, cause I think the symbolism of how our past relationships affect us forever is really powerful.

The writing process for T'he Gallows' was pretty simple, I had some lyrics and a melody in mind that I wrote on the way back from my house, so I sat down at the piano, found the chords, and wrote the rest of the song. I recorded the song with my producer Mike Abiuso who created the dreamy "Strawberry Field's" type vibe with the mellotron and layered backing vocals."

Those mellotron sounds work so well with Emma's vocal aesthetic, with her sustains and tonally plaintive emotional shades. I do like very much how those emotional notes, cues are not overly sad. Emma's graces them with a resolute feeling of maybe feeling cursed but also being ultimately blessed to move away from those who are so cold.

Emmrose is an eighteen-year-old songwriter whose career began four years ago when she wrote her first pop song in math class. To date, she has released 14 singles an award-winning EP, Hopeless Romantics, and is currently working on her second EP while going to college in New York City. Emmrose is a prolific songwriter, who records exclusively at Behind the Curtains Media in Brooklyn, New York with producer Mike Abiuso. In May of 2020 her single “The Grass Was Greener” was placed on two Spotify Editorial playlists, a surprising event due to the fact that the entire recording and production had been done remotely during the COVID lockdown in NYC, with Emmrose in her Manhattan bedroom and her producer working in his Brooklyn apartment. Emmrose is signed to Secret Road Music services for sync licensing, and the single “Waitlisted” aired on MTV’s Teen Mom in November of 2021.
