Ostrich and the funky art punk warped mirror of "Perfect Family"

"it's a perfect family, they have chestnuts in their yard... chestnuts in their yard..."

The cagey downbeats, the plaintive playful sax and the aloof baritone narrator of "Perfect Family" is my first introduction the the synth pop / funky and diverse Liverpool based Ostrich. The aesthetic here made me think of 70's proto punk outfits like Richard Hell and the Voidoids and 80's new wave subversives like Wall of Vodoo and Oingo Boingo softened with 80's romance wave filters like Spandau Ballet or even Pet Shop Boys. There is a sultry side, funky dance post punk bounces and the feeling that the family here is anything but perfect, that the wooden picket fence might be white but it is definitely leaning (just like it should be). I am digging the sax breaks and want to listen via my ear buds while strutting down the neighborhood.

Ostrich are an independent synth-pop group from Liverpool (UK), characterized by their 80s style synth-driven melodies and the deep baritone lead vocal.

Their debut single "Inside Out (Got No Doubt!)" was released in July 2020. It is the first of four singles recorded over the space of four chaotic days in Autumn 2019 at Studio Faust Records, Prague. Here, the band worked with upcoming producer Mikuláš Roubíček and legendary sound engineers Derek Saxenmeyer and Nick Fox. The result is a crisp and energetic debut for Ostrich, mastered by the multi-talented Nate Woods. The track was recently featured on BBC Radio 6 Music.
