"Out Of Your Depth" by London 5 piece alt rock outfit Something in the lake, and the first single from their upcoming EP "Numina", is a stunning jagged blend of sounds. You feel sort of 90's post rock textures, jazz dipped fusion of progressive rock and funk rock all stirred in, each element poking it's head out of the stew. Their are layers of counterpoised instrumentation, power punching drums and bass dancing with each other while guitars push minor and major 7th (or the like) chords with intricate fingering as rhythmic engines as shimmering synths cast a surreal backdrop. This diverse bed creates the direction Leon's emotional vox that have to urgently rush or lay back and emote tenderness as the complex musical narration dictates or maybe it is the other way around. In any event it commands attentions, plays with our emotions at whim and I love that.
Informed by the Canterbury Prog scene, Leon shares that "Out Of Your Depth" is about "conveying gratitude for your family, friends and people who are placed in your path”.
