Vincent Coomans and the beautiful emotional weight of "Must I Always"

"shake the guilt off and then get in my car, now will you let me drive you, away from this hellhole..."

Lean back into the quiet of the night and push play on "Must I Always" by Belgium singer-songwriter, musician Vincent Coomans and you will feel the song, the story, the pervasive weight of Vincent's beautiful melodies and words on your shoulders like a heavy coat. Vincent possesses a voice that not only slide effortlessly into stunning falsettos but also has this gritty natural back of the throat resonance that feels raw and torn, coated by the emotional context of his words. The opening line alone is a stunner, "shake the guilt off and then get in my car, now will you let me drive you, away from this hellhole..." and pulls your headspace in to nourish place.

Metaphorical patinas or not, as the song courses through the muck of the narrator's situation, it is as if you can see a movie in your head. The heavy piano chords and stark orchestration feels so fucking epic like a heady amalgam of artists as diverse as the darkest versions of Springsteen, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Fiona Apple, The Fray.

Press notes indicate that "'Must I Always' explores the friction that looms when you want to step away from a tumultuous youth only to find yourself feeling attracted to the toxic possibility of staying" which explains to some degree (in my mind) why it sounds so incredibly moving. Someone please go ahead and make a full fledged movie based on this song.

"Must I Always" is the first track from Vincent Coomans' upcoming album "The Great Rebuild" via Illuminine Records.
