Joel Jerome and the sheer hard beauty of "Everybody Come On" (Official Video)

"Everybody love me yeah come on / Nobody will ever beat me come on / If all my fans are lazy..."

I started my love affair with "Everybody Come On" 15 seconds in when the C to Bb to Ab notes delicately fall (if my ears aren't failing me). The song by singer-songwriter, producer Joel Jerome, most notably known from his impactful South Bay indie band Dios (Malos) that he began in 2004 with his brother Kevin in Hawthorne, California, is from his full length album "Super Flower Blood Moon" via Dangerbird set to drop tomorrow, May 13th, 2022.

The sheer beauty and emotional pull of "Everybody Come On" hinges on it's stripped down earnest sound fueled by an acoustic guitar melody that contains it's own story, dreadfully lovely strings and Joel's vocal and lyrical aesthetic. His self harmonized vocals waxing poetic with lyrics that are both  endearingly melancholy and comically acerbic at the same time made me think a little of Harry Nilsson at his most brilliant and (maybe) drunk too.

Joel describes the song as “the end of another night, the end of another party, the sad tug of unrealized potential soothed by the belief in a universal truth.” It is the kind of song that tugs at you and I think goes way beyond the internal struggle of being an artist at a time when a lot of society doesn't truly value art as art (but instead think of it as only a commodity). It gets to the essence of the self acceptance of who you are (whatever you do) instead of needing to get acceptance from others. At least that is one interpretation. Love this song.

I don't know how many times I have listened to this song. Hope you delve into "Super Flower Blood Moon" as will do soon.

Joel Jerome first gained acclaim with his pioneering South Bay indie band Dios (Malos), founded with his brother Kevin in Hawthorne, CA, a hometown they share with The Beach Boys and Redd Kross. The release of their self-titled debut album in 2004 led to the placement of their music in the Fox series and early-aughts cultural juggernaut The O.C. Jerome has since established himself as a producer, engineer, mentor and champion for scores of up and coming LA bands such as Cherry Glazerr, while continuing to write, produce and release his own music.

Jerome’s first full-length album with Dangerbird is due out next year and is a stunning showcase for his vast gifts as a singer, songwriter and lyricist. Recorded and produced by Jerome and mixed by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Kurt Vile), the album shines a light on his creative journey as well as the unique mix of influences that shape his work: the timeless melodic pop (Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys) and classic 70’s-era Mexican singer-songwriters that surrounded him growing up.
