Mace. and the alt rock layer cake of "Water's Fine" (and more)

"I can feel it through my bones / taken me back to when we were all alone..."

"Water's Fine" from Boston, Mass based Mace. and track 2 from their debut full length "Unclothed & Unbothered" (dropping 5/13/2022) has my head spinning in a good way and it is late but wanting to get one last review in I don't mind that I may be a bit scatterbrained. I like the fact that this track has my musical compass spinning. I dig the heaviness, the guitar sounds and the big, tight, wild drumming. I also love the sort of wild abandon at every turn including the earnest, passionate vox. Dig the fact that the song sounds live, not over produced and totally measured in terms of EQ. Like the striking bits of what I would consider over-modulation without being annoyingly harsh.

The song begins with almost a sort of 90's goth pop-esque tone and beautiful tom tom beats like a heavy Cure meets the Psychedelic Furs but it goes in other directions fast and while this alt rock sound is many things, I can only define what I am hearing by comparing (kind of) to a big cake with layers of different things and sonic ingredients. So indulge me, (clearing throat) feeling like "Water's Fine" contains the angst ridden heavy emo-esque of Fiddlehead, the indie rock tinges of The Cribs, the busker punk-esque of Sebadoh, the grunge dirtiness of Screaming Trees, the post punkery of Deerhunter, and the (avant) garage rockness of Crocadiles.

I know that is out there, I know that some of you reading my be looking up some of these iconic artists / bands who may not be iconic to you. Anyway it was a lovely scatterbrained exercise and I might even feel differently tomorrow (who knows but I doubt it).

You can delve into "Unclothed & Unbothered" on Spotify now and I believe all places when it drops tomorrow. I am dropping a bonus track down below called "Sea Sick".
