Nick Leng and the tour de force of nature avant pop "Spirals" (Official Video)

"spiral are spinning and lost in my head drifting to places you'll be..."

If "Spirals", the title track of South African born, Los Angeles based artist Nick Leng's upcoming sophomore full length (dropping July 22 via SOTA Records), portends the rest of the album in terms of artistic integrity and divergence then "Spirals" the album will be one that kills.

From the onset, the track has an opulent sheen but feels anchored in the earth, the piano shapes feel at first like a rambling piece of wanderlust for Nick's lushly tender and beautiful vocal lilt to hang on but bright, translucent bits of surreality crash down with big downbeats and shifting drums pushing things playfully along. It is difficult to explain but the composition, the songwriting overall seems to pull from broad 50's pop (even musicals of that time) as well as 80's avant new wave and 90's baroque pop all twisted through art glam rock and current surreal bedroom pop motifs lo AND hi-fi.

The song is a veritable tight rope. A song you want to hold onto tenderly and also dance wildly too. It sounds at once like falling in love and becoming utterly drunk at the same time. A tour de force of a song that you will want to come back to often. It is also one of those songs that can literally be inserted into any playlist and elevate it, reshape it and one that will seem to shape-shift each time you hear it.

Nick Leng's LEMONS is more than just an album; emotive yet precise even in its idiosyncrasies: this powerful debut LP is a heady mix of throwback dream-pop, classically routed, singer-songwriter introspection, and beat-driven whimsy. Born of an emotional breakup, apartment fire and subsequent loss of a friend, the creation of this body of work is the result of personal odyssey through wistfulness, isolation, and ultimately a renewal of spirit. Such is the unique allure of LEMONS: It is emotionally literate, musically impulsive, and creatively unpredictable.

The South African born, Los Angeles-based artist’s debut full-length comes after two EPs, Tunnels and Planes and Drivers, which racked up millions of streams online and widespread support ranging from ID to Consequence of Sound to Vogue and Christian Dior.
