Social Creatures and the intricate pop indie candor of "Seven Years"

"tell me why no one else will do..."

Do a trust fall into "Seven Years" by Brooklyn based Social Creatures and you will be caught tenderly in artful bass lines, dreadfully pretty floating guitar notes, nostalgic organ sounds, running drum beats, huge dreamy synth walls and pop indie vox that are easy to crush on. The lyrics hinge on (as the band shares) "the feelings of hitting the seven year itch with a loved one, and declarations of love for a friend who is no longer with the band" and the candor expressed throughout, told in both vague and pretty upfront poetry give the song hard edges.

Still you cannot deny the intricacies in this indie rock song that floats beautifully like a grand pop affair. To an old dog like me, I hear the ghosts of 60's Brit pop, late 70's progressive new wave (especially in that amazing organ sound) and current indie rock and pop blends.  The chord shapes here, time changes and emotional shifts are a lot to unpack. Jono Robertson's songwriting serves up more surprises the deep you go in but in doing so "Seven Years" feels more amazing after those repeated listens.

"Seven Years" is the 2nd single from Social Creatures' upcoming album.
