Astrologer and the avant pop sunshine of "Deténte" (Official Video)

"flying willfully through our brilliancy..."

"Deténte" by Astrologer, the avant pop project of singer-songwriter Andrew Cameron Cline and vocalist Candy Caballero along with various collaborators, is so broadly sweeping and artfully escapist that you wonder what kind of things, dreams, upside down pop worlds are brewing in Cline's mind. The sort of surreal emotional travelogue of a song that features Don Bolles of The Germs moves along on new wave-esque smashed beats, and pushed bass tones that feel daringly upfront. This production technique while maybe counterintuitive doesn't detract from the sonic sort of big 60's pop soundscapes that flood over the beat. The lead vox, delicious bending psych glam guitars, and backing vocals do not get lost in the haze. A great production feat and a bit of magic that Cline was tapped into early on as things were flushed out with Wyatt Blair at Lolipop’s Savannah Studios.

Of the track, he shares:

"There was magic in the air when 'Deténte' was made. I had a cyclical guitar part and a verse that I was having trouble fleshing out, but knew it felt special. When Wyatt and I began recording it, we split the song into three basic movements and worked on each part in order, which helped to create a good juxtaposition. By the time we recorded vocals with Candy, Don, and our pal Brooke from Active Decay, it was a frenzy of creation, with all of us running in and out of the studio to put what ultimately became about 50 harmony vocal tracks! The beginning of the song was bolstered by the avant-garde sound collage contributions Don made. It really took the whole song to a new level."

Amazing, dreamy stuff. The overall production, the sonic landscape is creatively stunning like a cross generational (other universe) amalgam of Brian Wilson, Aaron Maine (Porches) and Todd Rundgren filtered through lounge punk (or something like that).

"Deténte" is from the upcoming EP "Legerdemain (R)" which, itself, is a follow up to last fall's 6-track debut EP, "Legerdemain (L)" all via Lollipop Records.
