Fairy Tales In Yoghourt and the intricate expansion of "Shape Mistakes" (Official Video)

"I'm not as strange as it seems..."

"Shape Mistakes" is the first scintillating taste of Nantes, France based Fairy Tales in Yoghourt's first album tentatively planned for a 2022 autumn release. FTIY is the solo project of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and self confessed 'control freak' Benoît Guchet and I suppose you would have to be severely meticulous and maybe drink copious amounts of coffee to be able to create this first taste.

By any definition it is intricate. I mean really intricate. Sometimes intricate guitar playing such as this, and Benoît paints this sound under the umbrella of folk (I would not), can be devoid of soul because intricate playing sometimes feels like it is all function but Benoît draws up deep kinetic grooves here that may feel post rock-ian (yes) but also feels sort of jazz / funk dipped in their shapes, in their peaks and valleys and percussive vibes. The song falls head long into some beautiful weirdness too (sonically and lyrically). Benoît singing aesthetic rendered alone and layered up feels artful. When things settle down and out after getting expansive and surreal, there is a point of reflection and a desire to hit replay.

This French control freak has managed to craft a piece of art that feels like multiple players, a hard thing to do well. Check it out. It is a song that taps into your brain and heart.

Benoît Guchet's solo effort is quite a radical example of the "control freak" phenomenon.

Like a mountain, the moony man produces every 2000 years a record for which he has played most of the roles, leaving all his friends unemployed.

His friends, he plays with them in other french indie-rock/noisy acts (Bantam Lyons, Yes Basketball, Classe Mannequin).

Here, it's folk music, simple songs torn from all sides, sometimes towards the crudest minimalism, sometimes towards wide experimental arrangements.

Only common points: flawless melodies, quietly virtuoso guitar playing and songwriting, and a fragile and high-pitched voice.

Along those unmarked paths you cross footprints from Tom Jobim, Nick Drake, Steve Reich, Andy Shauf, Deerhoof, and a lot of strangers.
