Jessica Boudreaux and the reflective shiny vibes of "Loves to Break" (Official Video)

"my heart it loves to break so I come back to you..."

Whoa. Wow. It is funny, when I stepped into the beautifully textured and soul pop-esque emotional travelogue "Loves to Break" by Jessica Boudreaux (Summer Cannibals) I felt sucked back to past days driving in our old Saturn Vue wearing out the 1996 Romeo & Juliet soundtrack (remember? starring a 21 year old Leonardo Dicaprio and a 17 year old Claire Danes). I literally did wear that CD out and for whatever reason it still stands as one of my favorite collection of sounds.

I am not sure if it is the transportive nature of "Loves to Break" or the incredible drum (or beats) sound, Jessica's soulful vocal aesthetic and sort of jazz dipped mind wandering (with eyes looking at remembrances floating by in the clouds) lyrical melodies, OR the cool sort of lunge punk-esque electric guitar moves or the smile inducing bass lines or the overall furry jacket psychedelia but, BUT (a big but) "Loves to Break" sounds like it should be on that 1996 CD right in between Des’ree (I’m kissing you) and Butthole Surfers (Whatever). For me it feels incredibly endearing and, yes, sort of 90's but totally fresh too.

Maybe it is time for me to construct a new playlist on Spotify and do just that.

It is hard to capture a beautiful vibe on a song but Jessica and all involved have done it on this track. Press notey stuff  reveal the the EP itself was not only a point of artistic expression but of reflection and getting better:

[Having canceled a year’s worth of touring with Summer Cannibals due to the pandemic, Boudreaux was diagnosed with cancer in November of 2020. As she navigated the following year and a half of treatment and recovery, the very act of finishing the nascent record ultimately became one of healing.]

"Loves to Break" is from Jessica Boudreaux's upcoming EP "I Think My Heart Loves To Break" dropping June 24th and accompanied by a truly amazing Official Video that as directed by Brett Roberts comes across like the latest ghostly story from Blumhouse.

Portland’s Jessica Boudreaux — known as the creative force behind indie-punk band Summer Cannibals (Tiny Engines, Kill Rock Stars) — has announced her brand new I Think My Heart Loves to Break EP due out June 24. The elegant, percussive compositions and silky noir-pop sheen are a fitting soundtrack to the tumultuous period she spent making the album. Having canceled a year’s worth of touring with Summer Cannibals due to the pandemic, Boudreaux was diagnosed with cancer in November of 2020. As she navigated the following year and a half of treatment and recovery, the very act of finishing the nascent record ultimately became one of healing.

Joy and liberation amidst the pain is a clear touchstone of the songs on I Think My Heart Loves To Break. Over the pulsating bass line and entrancing beat that forms the bedrock instrumentation of lead single “Actor” which arrives today alongside a self-directed, shot & edited official video, Boudreaux follows the familiar script of hiding the truth about one's feelings to protect others and ourselves. At once a lush onslaught, the subdued subtlety of the song presents the emotional narrative while the song rises and falls around her, as if to match the rhythms of the experience she depicts
