ELLiS•D and the multi-spiked, jagged, proto punkian explosions of "Take Note"

"She said my honey it tastes nice / Dripping over the headlights / I'm not renowned for my sense of time / Going down under candlelight..."

The pandemic has sort of made the ultra-curious amateur virologists (of sorts) and maybe one of the takeaways of the Covid virus is the sheer amount of haphazardly arranged spike proteins (25 to 40). The randomness of those jagged spikes and the sheer number of them is what allows the virus (unfortunately) to survive and mutate. Oddly, I thought about that nimble, frenetic jaggedness when listening (when feeling) "Take Note" by Brighton based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist ELLiS•D. It is not only because it has a pure late 70's, early 80's proto punkian aesthetic, (think Television, Talking Heads, and Gang of Four colliding through a Pere Ubu strainer) but it too seems to have a random shape-shifting quality.

And maybe the Pandemic also comes into play because after the manic drummer of Strange Cages shot out as a solo artist as ELLiS•D late in 2019 with his debut single "Elastic" causing excitement and opening spots for the likes of DITZ, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, U-Bahn, Mush (just to name a few) LIVE shows came pretty much to a halt from Covid 19.

You can feel the unrestrained explosive freedom infused by the pent up pandemic times in "Take Note", the first sonic glimpse of an upcoming album.

Best known on the south coast as the manic drummer of Strange Cages who set about flailing his limbs across the tattered kits of Brighton’s basement DIY scene, the solo project of ELLiS·D leaps between psychedelic jangle, kraut rock and taut post-punk attack with a bristling energy. Showcasing a range of influence from the likes of Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) and Faye Milton (Savages) to the bittersweet romanticism of Nick Cave, sweeping melodies overlay fierce, motorik rhythms as ELLiS·D flirts with tongue-in-cheek 21st Century hysteria of a future slipping slowly from our grasp.

ELLiS·D began his solo project back in summer 2019 with the release of debut single ‘Elastic’ which led to support slots with bands such as DITZ, Frankie + The Witch Fingers, U-Bahn and Mush on stages across the UK in the short space of six months.

Spending the ensuing 15 months locked away in his shared DIY studio known as ‘The Carwash’ honing his craft, a string of self-produced singles garnered radio play from BBC Introducing, Boogaloo, Amazing, Hoxton Radio + many more before the return to live music saw him truly announce himself as a solo artist in the Brighton scene with a blistering set at Green Door Store’s 234 Festival, culminating in a first UK headline tour in December to support the release of debut EP 'We Are The Last Generation’.

** At this particular time we find ourselves in a financial pinch due to many factors. We want to keep AP going. It has been a passion project for over 13 years. PLEASE consider donating, we could really use the support. Thanks so much
