"it's my job to pretend, thank you Emulator..."
Well over a decade ago I recall David Bowie talking about a particular theory he ascribed to, or at least entertained by a philosopher who believed that the human brain is wired in such a way that it could only conceive of things that are possible. Bowie who was fascinated with science fiction and specifically his love of Robert A. Heinlein's "Starman Jones" (published in 1953) since he was a child. Of course, science fiction seeped into almost every aspect of Bowie's art. If the philosopher is correct than humanity is in store for dire things, right?
I thought of that for some reason while enjoying "Emulator" by Los Angeles based Hush Bewlay, maybe because of 'Bewlay' itself as a possible nod to Bowie ("The Bewlay Brothers" from 71's Hunky Dory) or maybe because "Emulator" with it's Depeche Mode-esque stance hearkens back while infused with sci-fi dioramas. The subject matter transports us back stylistically but feels absolutely current. We all have emulators on our phones (in some way) whether it is the highly algorithmic pill pushing Pavlovian Tik Tok and Instagram reels to the customized Siri who aims to please us.
