Matching Outfits and the revolving avant pop shine of "It Keeps Happening" (Official Video)

"When we lived together, we were a good team / I’d take care of her dog and she’d take care of me..."

When I first heard "It Keeps Happening", the debut single from Berlin lo-fi trio Matching Outfits and from their debut album "Band Made Out of Sand" via Kitchen Leg Records (dropping on September 21, 2022), I am pretty sure my left eyebrow raised high in a Spock-ian type thoughtfulness. The trance like organ sounds, the bold bass holding it all up, the chill beat, pearly guitar chords and, maybe most especially, Linnea MÃ¥rtensson's (formerly of duo Featherweights) captivating vocal style had me smiling all the way through and by the time her bandmates Rachel Glassberg (drums/guitar) and Leah Corper (bass) were bouncing / shouting the narrative back at her, I was gleefully vibing to it all.

The lyrics with wry humor, " Just the two of us / Maybe in the Kleingarten / It’s kinda like a park / And we both love parks, we’re special that way / We both love parks, we’re special that way..." is a big part of the allure.

The self incased humor and truth of allowing the world to revolve around ourselves too much is relatable. Linnea's quirky performance that, at first, made me think of Nico (whose aloof vocals would captivate with the Velvet Underground and whose solo 1967 version of Jackson Browne's "These Days" still makes me heady) but Linnea's style feels more conversational (not so monotone).

I will end my comments here as to not ruin any of the smile inducing surprises contained in "It Keeps Happening" itself and in the Official Video.

Twenty-two citrus fruits. A chain letter in Danish. A livestreamed funeral. With ultra-specific details and flashes of deadpan humor, Berlin lo-fi trio Matching Outfits relates tales of dissolving friendships, lost loved ones and insurmountable distances - between childhood and adulthood, summer and winter, Berlin and rural Sweden. At the heart of the project is singer and keyboardist Linnea MÃ¥rtensson (formerly of duo Featherweights), who merges wistful indie pop with a playful DIY ethos that’s further brought to the fore by bandmates Rachel Glassberg (drums/guitar) and Leah Corper (bass). Call-and-response vocals that convene into three-part harmonies, shout-along choruses, instrumental breakouts: whether on debut album Band Made Out Of Sand (out Sept 21 on Kitchen Leg Records) or in their live shows, you never really know what to expect.

** At this particular time we find ourselves in a financial pinch due to many factors. We want to keep AP going. It has been a passion project for over 13 years. PLEASE consider donating, we could really use the support. Thanks so much
