As I think about the break ups I have seen they have always been for the best. Not that "sage" by Okay Alright, aka Chicago bred, LA based singer songwriter Bryce Waitkus is a break up song unless you can break up with yourself. I guess you can, in a way, break up with a version of yourself. Amid rolling textured acoustic guitar patterns, bass pushes and a beautiful repeating note that feels like an urgent reminder to move forward, Bryce reflects somberly, candidly about moving to his better self. Hopefully we all make this journey. Sometimes it takes a lifetime. Usually it is realized with the help of loved ones.
This lyrical passage stays with me:
looking in the bookstore window
I’m not ready to walk in
catching my reflection
and wishing I was him
I’m not ready to walk in
catching my reflection
and wishing I was him
About the song, Bryce shares:
"I wrote it after a 6 hour long chat on an LGBTQ suicide hotline (I'm a crisis counselor there) with a contact who's story really resonated with me and my own journey of identity. co-mixed by Derek Ted, featuring vox from Al Menne (Great Grandpa, Pickleboy)."
