Bambara and the gothic Americana post punkery of "Mythic Love" + "Birds" LIVE on the Tapetown Sessions (Official Video)

Before you step into the Tapetown Sessions (at Grapehouse Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark) of Athens, Georgia bred, Brooklyn, New York based Bambara you better shake off all your pretense, tussle your hair, be prepared to sweat on the back of your neck and get ready to receive gritty stories. Hearing / seeing these boys on this live performance session is incredible, especially going in cold. They embody two songs here. "Mythic Love" slams out of the gate like a bull and rider at a rodeo. The incredibly snare heavy drum beat and screaming guitars are so evocative of punkabilly and I admit that the statue stance of Billy Zoom (X) flashed in my brain (him smiling all the while). Key to Bambara's sound is Reid Bateh's vocal countenance. It is a sound that scowls, broods, has a sinewy muscularity. It's character is at once stoic and aloof but totally passionate. You get the sense that the artist behind the voice is a man of little words but when he opens his mouth you listen.

"Birds" punches hard too but the sensation trades the unbridled urgency of "Mythic Love" for a post punk vastness. Both songs are darkly romantic blending in Gothic Rock, Americana rock, surf punk, desert rock. I thought of artists like Nick Cave, The Cult, oddly enough a young Bruce Springsteen, Dramarama and The Drones.

Bambara's core is twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh and their childhood friend William Brookshire with a talented orbit of live collaborators.

Bambara formed in Athens, GA with twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh and their childhood friend William Brookshire, honing what was originally a sinister, unforgiving brand of noise punk.

In 2011, the band stepped out of the shadows of Georgia’s Southern Gothic landscape and wandered into the littered streets of New York City. There, in Brooklyn’s DIY scene, Bambara quickly made a name for themselves with their visceral live shows. After releasing their debut LP Dreamviolence (2013) and sophomore LP Swarm (2016), Bambara toured relentlessly in America and Europe.

In 2018 Bambara signed to Wharf Cat Records and released their third LP, Shadow on Everything. The album signaled a huge stride forward for the band both lyrically and sonically, introducing a conceptual framework where each song acted like a chapter in one continuous story. The record was rapturously received by the press. NPR called it a “mesmerizing, western gothic opus,” Bandcamp called the "horror-house rampage,” "one of the year's most gripping listens." Popular British 6Music DJ Steve Lamacq, dubbed them the best band of 2019’s SXSW.

Following tours supporting IDLES, Daughters and Girl Band, Bambara began recording their 4th LP Stray (2020). This record represents both their most experimental and accessible work to date, advancing their fashion of storytelling amidst a vast and pulverizing landscape.

** At this particular time we find ourselves in a financial pinch due to many factors. We want to keep AP going. It has been a passion project for over 13 years. PLEASE consider donating, we could really use the support. Thanks so much
