Shrimp Eyes and the frenetic energy and cascading beauty of "Fits and Starts"

"you know what to say, you do this every day, I'm trying in fits and starts..."

To do something in “fits and starts” is to do it intermittently or sporadically, so the urgent movements with shifting puzzle pieced drums, tied to a truly kinetic bass line while scatter shot layers of guitar and vocals seem to reach out in all directions on the track "Fits and Starts" by Peckham (UK) four-piece Shrimp Eyes feels like an exquisitely appropriate title. The dense musicality makes me think of late 70's proto punk edges offset by 80's goth pop-esque vox. It is like a stirred blend of the frenetic energy of Gang of Four colliding with the post punk pop elegant vocal timbre of The Mekons (or something like that).

Shrimp Eyes are Joseph Goody on lead vocals and guitar, Jason Mirchandani on guitar and vocals, Didzis Jurgelans on drums and Guy Middleham on bass.

Peckham four-piece Shrimp Eyes return with their brilliant brand new single 'Beat of Time'. With a pounding bass riff at the heart of it, the song teeters from driving forwards care-free to swinging back with restraint as vibrant guitars swirl around the drums and percussion.

The aim was for the music and lyrics to not only reflect the anxiety experienced whilst the band were struggling to feel motivated and creative in the ennui of lockdown, but also to serve as the kick up the arse needed to persevere through.

Early 2021 found the band celebrating the hard-earned buzz created from the release of their witty indie banger, 'Straight Up', which saw them pick up support from Spotify's Hot New Bands playlist, BBC Introducing, 6Music, Radio 1 and charted Top 10 on Amazing Radio.

Prior to the pandemic, Shrimp Eyes had been road-testing new material across London's grassroots venues but with live music lost, the band concentrated on developing new ideas ready to be written and recorded as soon as Peckham's Super Unison studios were able to safely reopen.

Influenced by the likes of everyone from King Gizzard, Courtney Barnett, and Pip Blom, as well as classic science fiction books and the Fantastic Funghi documentary. Shrimp Eyes are a proudly 100% DIY band. 'Beat of Time' was self-recorded at the end of summer, with bassist Guy Middleham producing and mixing the song.

** At this particular time we find ourselves in a financial pinch due to many factors. We want to keep AP going. It has been a passion project for over 13 years. PLEASE consider donating, we could really use the support. Thanks so much
