"I’ll tell you my secret / not enough love? / how bout a pick-me-up / year of the rooster / forever raw / year of the rat / baby I’m a narc for your love..."
As the brooding, distorted, caustic nature of "Narc" by New York based Cutouts drip feeds in your brain and you might see things. There is a weirdness within the sinewy thick musculature of the bass synths but look at it in another light and the beats have such a wide deep groove that you could even imagine MJ dancing to it. Like an amalgam of Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Bauhaus, the stories contained within feel dark and otherworldly.
Cutouts is the solo project of Alex MacKay who shares:
"It's my first release since joining NYC synth-pop group Nation of Language, and bears some influence of their more electronic sound. Try listening when you're somewhere you shouldn't be.
'Narc' released 9/7 with a music video filmed on a Hi-8 camcorder, my younger brother’s directorial debut (John MacKay).
Recorded at home over the last year, 'Narc' is a song about duality, duplicity and seduction. Selling yourself out in order to get what you want."

Cutouts is the creative project and moniker for Alex MacKay, a sound artist and music producer based in NYC.
2017's Baby Blue Suede EP garnered press from Alt Citizen, Indie Shuffle and Melted Mag who praised the project's "powerful psychedelic tone". Following the EP's release, MacKay produced several tracks on CHAI's debut album for Sub Pop WINK and oversaw the compilation release of CUD - A Compilation for NYC Mutual Aid. After joining NYC synth-pop group Nation of Language in early-2022, the next Cutouts single to land is "Narc", a potent post-punk paean that conjures U.S. Girls and Alan Vega in equal measure.
Over the last four years the Cutouts project has also comprised a rotating cast of musicians including Shannon Wise (The Shacks), Chris Maier (A Car That Swims), Leo Grossman (Vagabon, Salón), Léna Bartels (Psymon Spine), Ian Salazar (Closebye, Majik Taylor) and Eli Recht-Appel (Great Crane).
** At this particular time we find ourselves in a financial pinch due to many factors. We want to keep AP going. It has been a passion project for over 13 years. PLEASE consider donating, we could really use the support. Thanks so much
