"Never let go of this moment / Memories will fade and get older / Re-live the past in the sheets of your bed on the morning after..."
The absolutely cool spinning "Never Let Go" by Knife Girl, the musical moniker of 21 year old musician / producer Lili Aslo from Helsinki, Finland feels like an elevated piece of alt pop. The debut track, "a celebration of Trans Youth", is an expert cross generational / multi-genre'd blend of styles and attitudes. I mean I can, off the top of my head, feel late 70's soul pop, 80's synth pop, 90's jazz dipped jangle pop, 2000's yacht rock, and current lounge punk vibes. Whatever blended cake this is, Lili's vocal aesthetic, smoothly pop but with art rock aplomb, is the icing on top. Plus the bubbly xylophone, lead guitar adornments and sax solo doesn't hurt either.
The sound is so kaleidoscopic like an amalgam of artists like Wham, Tame Impala, Yazoo, Fan Death, T-Rex and Chicano Batman (yeah, I am totally serious).
Of the single, she explains:
“My partner at the time was coming over to visit me. As I waited for her train to arrive, I jammed with my guitar and hummed what would end up becoming the melody of this song. I reminisced about moments from our earlier dates. Things like the bread we ate and the beers we drank on a bench by the docks. I knew that at some point, eventually those fond memories would fade away in my mind, which made me a bit sad. Musically, I wanted this track to sound like a soft, warm memory.”

Meaningful inspirations make for stunning songs.
