Sweden's Råhypnos and the rustic folk beauty and sadness of 'What is Real?'

"I've lost track of space and time peeling holes in the wall paper..."

The pulsating atmospheres of  'What is Real?' by Gothenburg, Sweden's duo Råhypnos feels folk rustic, somber, candid eschewing the folk indie tropes of the day for honest reflections in stripped down way. The melodies for me have a 70's, maybe even 60's folk tone and the reliance on acoustic guitars with organs, keyboards and accordions heighten the folk classicalism. This push to simple productions doesn't negate the emotionality and the elegance. I love the vocal aesthetic, the harmonies that sound passionate, full of loss and longing.

"I've lost track of space and time peeling holes in the wall paper / so many thoughts run through my head swarming around like a war of ants..."

'What is Real?' is the title track of their latest 2022 album that just dropped a mere 3 days ago.

Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, Råhypnos is a duo that consists of Nadja Virgé and Pablo Rautenberg and was formed in 2015. The self-titled debut EP from 2016 was described by critics as dark indie mixed with modern pop influences. The first full-length "Do We Wan't It?" from 2018 had a large soundscape with distorted guitars that meet electronic soundscapes.

In 2021, the duo recorded the new album “What is Real?”, which will be released October 28, 2022. The sound of the new songs is intimately stripped down with acoustic guitars and vocals in focus in combination with various organs, keyboards and accordions. The songs were recorded in Pablo's kitchen to try to create the feeling of sitting around the kitchen table and playing together.
