The Materialistics and the uneasy art rock brilliance of 'Om'

From the very onset, the divergent 'Om" by New York's The Materialistics feel wonderfully artful, for me, steeped in the kind of anomalous sounds of late 70's proto punk, 90's alt rock. I love the beginning chord shapes (Ab to Eb to F to E) that shift from flats to whole notes giving the track an uneasy surprising sense, the layers of guitar, the cool / playful drumming and falsetto vox with melodies that seem to counter position against it all. Listening on repeat, many times, I thought of a quirky amalgam of creative artists like XTC, Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Wire, MGMT and Ours.

I am totally new to The Materialistics so it will be nice to get to know them. Check out their 3 song EP, entitled '3 Songs' on their Bandcamp page and they have a full length in the works.
