Widows Gold and the artful rock indie eruptions of "I Can't Help You"

"I hear you whispering in my ear / I could run, still feel you near / How long has it taken to get here / Feel you close like I could disappear / And finally see it all so clear..."

Often times bands that are inspired by 80's new wave or post punk atmospheres infuse their sound with that decades tropes whether it be the frenetic Devo-esque new wave drawl or those synth drums that seemed to make their way into every 80's adventure comedy soundtrack or the use of a vintage Roland A-800PRO MIDI Keyboard Controller to get that Depeche Mode tone. You get none of those mental markers when listening to Costa Mesa, California's Widows Gold even though they are inspired by the 80's and I love that. The influences that move them are manifested not so much as the provisional time stamps of that era but rather in inspired songwriting and a lean stripped down sound.

You can hear the precise emotional edges, dreamy and passionate on "I Can't Help You" from the absolutely hook filled bass line that shines throughout the entire song to the artfully shaped drumming, the percussive synergistic guitar work and Madeline Star's stunning vocals. Somehow this song is absolutely punchy from top to bottom. Great production and, this may sound curious given that this song doesn't sound like a Fleetwood Mac song but I absolutely thought of Stevie Nicks in Madeline's vocal persona (more than once).

Great track.
