leoblu and the hard embrace of "cake"

"people ask me how progress is but I'm only going backwards, backwards..."

In life, to survive, we all have to playact from time to time. We hide our pain, our dread, or existential crisis and smile politely, say we are doing ok. It is the kind of playacting we learn from a young age, probably by the time we are entering kindergarten and begin being taught the politeness, the niceties of society, we begin stuffing, stuffing our feelings.

I thought about this while listening to the bloodletting of "cake" by leoblu who originally hails from the Finnish island Åland and is currently based out of Berlin. "cake" is not about a sweet desert but about layers of grief. The song is wonderfully layered as well with leoblu's beautiful yet melancholy vocal countenance. The textured bass thumps and drives like a punk song as the notes circle down the drain descending into a percussive barrage. The persistent downward spiral of sounds creates a dramatic framework for leoblu's vox, aloof and questioning.

"I'm getting dressed for my brother's funeral, I wish I believed in a God. Even though I woke up from a whisper, I don't believe in anything at all..."

Black spaces are pervasive as the song builds, "a hole in my chest" / "a hole in the ground" / "there's a cross by your name, it shouldn't be there"...

"cake" is a hard listen but somehow relatable, cathartic and just fucking real.

Hailing from the Finnish island Åland, leoblu draws inspiration from the deep oceans surrounding her island’s archipelago, and from the dusty streets and colourful corners of Berlin, where the artist is currently based. On a quest for authenticity and vulnerability, leoblu uncovers stories within herself and channels it towards her own universe of dark pop. It’s bombastically minimalistic, its harmonies drenched within harmonies, its heart-wrenching lyricism. It's all lies, it's all truth. It's leoblu.

After gaining global momentum with the song "still dancing", which got featured as the soundtrack to the Netflix series “The Protector”, leoblu has performed on indie festival stages around the world; from Toronto, to Taipei ~ from Madrid, to Buenos Aires.
