Tim Mechling and the bittersweet roller coaster ride of "Hannah's Song"

"I'm underground but I'm still goin down / bedrock I'm breakin through / I could never pay em back all the money I owe / but I'm buyin somethin special for you..."

If "Hannah's Song" by Mount Vernon, Washington based singer songwriter Tim Mechling were a movie it would be a 3 hour affair based on a novel taking place from 1945 and 1976. It would be a dark comedy and love story and murder mystery and social farce rolled into one. There would be things that feel like metaphors but are not and heroes that turn out to be as numb as serial killers. Think of an amalgam of Kurt Vonnegut, Donald Ray Pollock, Don DeLillo and Graeme Simsion.

There is a lot going on in "Hannah's Song" but Mechling disarms with wonderful wordplay and a songwriting aesthetic in between (yet somehow closely linked to) if Elliot Smith were in the Beatles (just thinking out of the box folks). I seriously dig this song. I could probably dissect it and do a dissertation on it but it would only ruin it for me. There is the sense that life is full of odd coincidences, that God is the ultimate prankster. I fucking love the chorus and the sideways musical break. Bravo Tim.
