Louis Inglis and the avant garde powdered sugar of "Older"

"follow the seahorse where she walks..."

The lovely thing about avant garde music sprinkled with surreal powdered sugar is that it will likely transport you. Unexpected, unusual poetry carried on the framework of the music that might be built on spindly legs that jut out precariously is exciting. "Older" by singer-songwriter /producer Louis Inglis from Perth Australia is one of those kinds of songs. Stylistically, it is hard to describe but sonically it feels a bit withered, it has somber melodic tones and Louis's vocal countenance while beautiful (even endearing) feels a bit withered too. It sounds organic but alien at the same time. Louis injects tension with strange ascensions offset with whimsy courtesy of what sounds like a melodica but may not be. He also creates unreal pauses and with the walls of sounds that push against ominous dissonance he creates unsteady ground within the melancholy.

I would be hard pressed to offer any comparisons to other artists which is a great thing but for some reason I did think of an amalgam of artists like Black Francis, Billy Corgan, Isaac Brock, Wayne Coyne, Mark Linkous all having a conversation 15 years ago in a non-descript street cafe in Paris. I knew this song would transport me.

"Older" is from the new Louis Inglis album “Fallen Times” described as "a swirl of distortion, reverb and regret, with glowing orbs of of optimism hanging in the smoky sky."

Louis has also served as the drummer for local Perth/Fremantle bands The Shops, Salary and Jeff’s Dead.
