moondaddy and the healing nature of "Silver Dust"

Dream pop is a big umbrella, one that might even have a dozen or more micro genres swimming it the melancholia. Listening to the grand vastness of "Silver Dust" from San Diego-based moondaddy’s upcoming full-length "Poet Lies" and you feel a lot of emotions, the least of them being sadness. There is something magical happening here, it feels steeped in fantasy, in dreams that may be more than dreams but something more spiritual. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Cara Potiker is the sonic auteur here and her vocal countenance has a lot to do with the emotional artful import here. She brings a baroque post punk quality to her vocal stance and there is a fractured quality within the beauty. Like scratches on a film real and buried down deep there is an eerie darkness you might associate with true pain molded into surreal stories (Twin Peaks comes to mind).

Press notey stuff reveal that ["Silver Dust" was originally written as a love song, but evolved into a song about calling our soul back to ourselves and protecting our inner dreamer.] and, to me, Cara's vocal melodies (caressed with musical ones) while feeling somber also feel sagely. The amazing haze of sounds, and there are many, ones that you will only discover after repeated listens, are glued together by Cara's voice and the circular electric guitar patterns and bass push. The swelling big building outro lifts you up in a truly graceful way.

There is comfort with in the healing ethereal "Silver Dust". It might feel just right performed in a church but not one that is built to celebrate a higher power but one built to celebrate the power and love inside ourselves.

Started as a collection of quarantine bedroom songs, moondaddy was dreamt up as a way to escape the crippling existential dread that was plaguing us all during the 2020 lockdown. Cara became obsessed with analog equipment and tangible audio formats, spending hours at a time locked in her space facing and out-letting her dreams, fears, and addictions. The only activity that felt safe was crate digging at local record stores, which inspired her to invest in a record lathe and tape deck to make physical demos.

She discovered El Paso, Texas-based Manuel Calderon aka El Cosmophonico listed as a mixing credit on the back of one of her favorite records and she eventually decided to hand over her demos for professional mixing. The two formed a fast musical connection and decided to cut a full album at Sonic Ranch, a pecan orchard and residential recording studio in Tornillo, Texas. Calderon and Potiker were joined by several talented local El Paso and Ciudad Juárez artists that contributed heart and depth to every soundscape. Pulling from influences ranging from 1970s glam rock to 90s shoegaze and trip hop, moondaddy’s forthcoming debut full-length, Poet Lies, is a reverb soaked, shimmering fever dream of a record.
