Dontmesswithjuan and Rex Kalibur's darkly heavenly collaboration "Titan on the Run"

"like a titan on the run..."

"Titan on the Run" is a mind bender of a song. Depending on your artistic predilections, it may draw your mind to horror pop imagery or to fantasy and science fiction realms. However you react to it, it is vastly intriguing and while in my capacity as a music writer I oftentimes wish songs were shorter, in this case I wish "Titan on the Run" was longer because the movie it casts in my brain is one worth seeing. The track is a collaboration of Dontmesswithjuan, the solo project of Montreal, Canadian singer, songwriter and music producer Stéphanie Essiambre and Rex Kalibur, the ambient / downtempo moniker of producer David M. Young, based in Joshua Tree, CA. This pairing, I believe their first, is the proverbial match made in heaven. In some ways their somewhat different aesthetics might feel like puzzle pieces that don't exactly fit, ones that are close but have to be hammered together. Sometimes these artistic difference when coalesced together are magical, they are here.

I don't know who did what (writing credits are assigned to both Young and Essiambre) , what late night conversations shaped what was to become. I love Stéphanie's vocal countenance. I love the aloof visions, the sounds that conjure up ambient illusions, the balance of heaviness and nuance, the badassery and gentle touches. I love everything about this.

Dontmesswithjuan is the project of a girl who likes to stay in the shadows. From Montreal, 360° artist, she is unfolding into her own genre called Surrealist Electronica, where her philosophical questions, haunting voice, dark textures, glitchy sound effects, and surrealist videos collide to create a cinematic world outside of human reality. Loving emotionally-charged voices, hypnotizing electronic music and sound design, Stéphanie has been influenced by Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Thom Yorke, and Björk.

Dontmesswithjuan and her record label SONO Music Group are in the process of releasing her first debut album Juan & the Pursuit of Happiness in 8 singles. Each single represents a level into fictional character Juan’s quest to shed light on his questions of purpose.
