Allie Crow Buckley and the illusory diaphanous beauty of "Dreamboat Soulmate" (Official Visualizer)

"Always had a thing for crooked teeth / I’ve been laying petals at your feet / Worshipping at the altar you built for me..."

Some songs are not what they seem. "Dreamboat Soulmate" by the evocative Los Angeles indie artist Allie Crow Buckley is one such song. Sonically, it rides a tight rope between dream pop / adult contemporary and gothic psyche rock but it also (for me) has folk bones and that are maybe even covered with baroque pop and late 70's broad pop. At first listen, you know when your mind seems to cherry pick the words that stand out to you, it feels like a trippy, wonderfully askew love song. I mean even the title feels like that. Then when you feel the weight of the words things become more complex.

Allie Crow Buckley's vocal countenance is strikingly beautiful and unique, aloof but feeling every syllable. Her vocal patter feels jazzy really, the rushes, the pauses feel naturally cool. The lyrics here, acerbic, sardonic, double edged, candid, actualized, dipped in poison that doesn't kill are fun to realize. “Dreamboat Soulmate" is off of her upcoming album, "Utopian Fantasy" dropping May 19th. The complex ethereal hybrid was written and produced by Buckley and singer-songwriter Declan McKenna. Allie adds, “A sort of mix between a satirical and sincere love song. Dreamboat is journey within a relationship, the subtleties of acquiescence, and losing ones sense of self. Then slowly, as if awaking from a spell, reclaiming it."

Get lost in it and look off in the distance during a quiet time or in the mirror when your world is too fucking noisy and... sing along.

"I put those medals on your bedpost, babe / I’ve fallen out of love with everything / What’s the point of fighting it anymore

All the buses stop for me and / I’m cruising through an astral weekend / All the things I’ve loved I’m leaving

So long, so lonely / In all I dream

Dream on, dream with me / In harmony

Dreamboat soulmate / I’d do whatever you said / Dreamboat soulmate / I’d do whatever you said"

Allie Crow Buckley’s music is a world unto itself. A journey from deep within the forest to the coastal cliffs. In sound, her music is a paradox, capturing the gentle folk of Joni Mitchell alongside the pagan allure of Black Sabbath. She is known for her balance of ethereal, soaring melodies, strong rhythmic elements, and heavy, rooted low end. This balance, coupled with her allegorical sense of lyricism, lends itself to being both beautifully meditative and unsettling at times. She draws inspiration from numerous sources - from painters, to poets, as well as mythology and her love of classical music from her years of formal training as a dancer. Following the release of her acclaimed debut 2019 EP So Romantic, she released her debut LP, Moonlit and Devious, in 2021 to praise from The New Yorker, NPR, Under The Radar, Paste, and more.

'Utopian Fantasy' out May 19, 2023.
