Grace Gallagher and the indie rock midnight movie of "By the Book"

 

"Midnight / Hot drive / Campbell's on his way to the pharmacist / On the staircase feeling blue with his eyes gone red..."

I love songs that have a cast of characters in them. Of course, characters I know nothing about. There is an air of mystery and if the song is good, it feels like a seed of a story that overtime flowers and blossoms in your head the more times you hear it. If it is great, the images grow into a movie, a sweeping piece of cinema or even better, a sketchy midnight indie movie. "By the Book" by 22 year old Melbourne artist/songwriter/producer Grace Gallagher is one such song.

"By the Book" is a jammy piece of indie rock with cross generational tones, an amalgam of 70's proto punk, 80's new wave and American 90's college rock radio as well as current revisionist rock. There is something about it, the sway, the sideways stares and randy predilections that feels brazen and mischievous (and iconic) like it was penned by artists like Ray Davies of the Kinks and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.

At 22, of course, there is a slight chance that Grace Gallagher isn't into The Pretenders or The Kinks but judging by her prowess as a songwriter and her great evocative vocal aesthetic I have a feeling she knows about and all the musical artists who matter.
