headboy and the alt rock joyful rediscovery of "Cement"

"some times the things we say are not so grandiose..."

Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse, Pixies, Radiohead, Television, Pavement, just to name a few, are musical luminaries who don't quite think like most artist. Extremely original with far reaching perspectives on art, with innate abilities and who craft art that inspires millions. It is like they spread seeds that blossom into wonderfully askew new artists and every damn time I find one my heart is filled with that special kind of joy. Listening to "Cement" by London trio headboy and I feel that joy, that buzz.

"Cement" disarms you quickly, it begins as an inviting amble of sounds but soon enough drops into jagged, interconnected sounds all glued together by sparkling roller coaster guitar notes. The track is from the band's upcoming EP 'Was It What You Thought and' will be released on the 9th June via Blitzcat Records. I love three piece bands. headboy is comprised of guitarist/bassist and vocalist Mars West (they/them), bassist/guitarist vocalist Jess Collins (she/they) and drummer Oli Birbeck (they/them) and they seem to know the sonic economy of musical scale. Their tightly wound sound doesn't waste anything.

Speaking more on the lyrical inspiration behind new single "Cement", the band said:

"In the heat of a turbulent summer, misrule reigned. Cement is about taking stock and refuge in the comfort of your friends and the people around you; and the rediscovery of friendship. It includes advice from Mars’ grandfather ‘don’t count the days it slows them down’ - a warning against wishing away life."

"Cement" lyricist Mars West reveals:

"When things are difficult I often find myself thinking 'how long before this will end?' Then I think about my grandfather's warning - 'don't count the days it slows them down'. Sometimes you have to absorb yourself in whatever chapter of life you are in, instead of spending all your time wishing for the next one. Cement is very much about that."

Mars has a smart, wise grandfather.

Consisting of guitarist/bassist and vocalist Mars West (they/them), bassist/guitarist vocalist Jess Collins (she/they) and drummer Oli Birbeck (they/them), headboy have already established themselves as a beguiling force to be reckoned with on the live stage, cultivating a devoted following in London and further afield.

The trio's much-anticipated debut EP 'Was It What You Thought' tracks a period of political turbulence; rediscovering and reflecting on the importance of friendship and loyalty, ending with a heartfelt treatise on loss and vulnerability. Ultimately a study into the often cyclical, yet always unpredictable nature of life itself, newly released single "Cement" specifically zeros in on that significance of friendship, amidst a backdrop of bright, intricate indie-rock.
