Nocona George and the morphing indie rock brilliance of "Pine Weevil"

"a dom o' voi / in yer backroom /clicks its teeth / runs from vacuums / wary / of the looks youre settin free..."

Oh, yes it is nice to be surprised and touched by the askew artistry and musicality, sounds, visions of songs that are curious. One such curious surprise is track 1 "Pine Weevil" from the "Yee Haw" album (released late last year) by Brooklyn artist, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Nocona George. When the song starts I sense a post punk feeling in the drum beat and throttling sounds but when the sparkling (truly cool) electric guitar and pushing bass drop in I am sensing sort of indie rock meets surf rock (The Drums' Portamento pops in my head) and then Nocona George's curious lyrics fall from his lips in artful ways. He sings about pine weevils and cypress beetles, injects a smattering of Russian, a seizure and in a off handed way, maybe a house spirit from pre-Christian Slavic mythology (I think but am not sure).

That sort of early The Drums sense (that I now feel all the way through in some tiny way) morphs in both nuanced and bold ways ways and I feel late 70's jam rock sounds, explosions of garden rock tones, an amalgam of Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Fleetwood Mac (surely some sonic cue that I may only hear in my scattered brain). The guitar shapes and the way they wrap around the lyrical melodies are incredibly engaging.

A very cool curious surprise. Maybe put simply "Pine Weevil" is ultimately about the angst of life and commitment to someone or something, I am only guessing but I dig this song. My daily life is busy with too many chores and side hustle but I hope I have time to check out "Yee Haw" and I hope you can too.
