"I wear this rotting jacket of wrinkled stinky tweed... aaahwww"
Put your checkered peg legged slacks on, shiny half boots and a two tone shirt and step back into the 80's pogo sway of "Real Thief" by Insert Title Policy, the musical project of Virginia based singer-songwriter / producer Ben Demase. The song feels decidedly retro, a cross-transplanted hybrid of 80's indie rock and Goth pop. You might think of The Smiths or The Field Mice or even The Kitchens of Distinction or other "The" bands from back in the day, and you might think of them in their early years because Ben is only 16.
A lot of times when I come across an artist who has inspirations that he or she wears too too much it might be a turn off but it absolutely works here because a homage is exactly the point of "Real Thief". Ben purposely goes in all meta, self reflective and self referential with the iconic sounds that inspire him, in this case The Smiths and I like that and, besides, he does it so fucking well.
Ben shares:
"This song, Real Thief, is me pleading guilty to the judge for my charge of Grand Larceny (of course, I'm not actually being charged for anything... yet). This song is really about admitting to thievery, it's about ripping off other artists and poets. For the instrumentation in this song, I took heavy inspiration from the Smiths."
