Proteins Of Magic and the emotional human force and alien intentions of "Divine Physics" (Official Video)

"Devil clipped your ticket too / Tore my heart out just to find you / Coyote screams where you used to be / I crossed a line to cut you free..."

With an artist name as brain twisting as Proteins of Magic crafting a song called "Divine Physics", two words that seemingly oppose each other and embrace each other tightly like turned over magnets, it might not be a complete surprise to hear how trippy and beautifully artful POM is but still I am certainly stunned by Kelly Sherrod's emotionally powerful vocal countenance and how utterly she assumes her art. Possessing a voice that not only metamorphoses thoroughly into her own askew existential poetry, her sonic performance feels like performance art that you can see and not just hear. Her exquisite marriage of her artfulness and her set of pipes bring to mind an amalgam of artists like Annie Lennox, Florence Welch, Siouxsie Sioux, Liv Kristine. You can never really know how much someone's ability is innate or born out of the labor of one's work but as I listen to "Divine Physics" with it's sparse bloodletting and pushed artistic spirituality, Sherrod certainly feels like a force of nature (as much as an alien presence).

The passage, "Devil clipped your ticket too / Tore my heart out just to find you / Coyote screams where you used to be / I crossed a line to cut you free..." sticks with me, maybe because it feels like it has mythological underpinnings and maybe because the image of snow dabbled coyotes ambling down my street with their heads down is haunting. The refrain, "On a breath it withers / When you're open it delivers / Angel Hieroglyphics / Some say, Divine Physics..." with astounding phraseology that leaves you getting in philosophical arguments with yourself is from Proteins Of Magic's upcoming EP "Angel Hieroglyphics".

As press notes reveal:

Kelly Sherrod lives between Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Nashville, Tennessee, is a multi-faceted artist practicing in both audio and visual media. She writes, produces and performs as Proteins of Magic, and creates visual worlds to translate it to the screen using claymation to digital art.

"Divine Physics" walks a tightrope over gothic rock atmospheres with rivers of alien gospel underneath filtered through post punk and baroque pop intentions floating in space.

There isn’t a single genre that describes the musical output of Proteins of Magic, but in broad terms it embodies the realm of Gothic; from the use of voices from elsewhere, layered upon one another, to the drama of chamber pop melded with eerie post-punk, accompanied by videos that morph from the natural to the cyber.

Living between Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Nashville, Tennessee, Kelly Sherrod is a multi-faceted artist practicing in both audio and visual media. She writes, produces and performs as Proteins of Magic, and creates visual worlds to translate it to the screen using claymation to digital art.

Through her work she blurs the boundaries between innovative alt-pop and contemporary art music, bringing into existence a world that is uniquely her own.

"I consider her in that lineage of female musicians with a completely unique voice and approach, in the tradition of Nina Simone, Nico, Patti Smith, Björk, etc. She is the real deal.” - Shayne Carter 2022

Kelly made her debut into the NZ music scene fronting Punches with James Duncan (2003-09) and playing bass with Dimmer’s Shayne Carter (2007-09), as well as for Oscar & Grammy winner Ryan Bingham for both of his 2013 European and American Tours.

Proteins of Magic has had four songs debut on NZ Alternative radio charts, and her self released debut album was a finalist for the 2022 Taite Music Prize / Auckland Live Independent Debut Award.

Proteins of Magic’s output is consistently evolving through the discovery of new sounds, methods and practices, towards a forthcoming body of work, live shows, and accompanying video art.

Her live show has also been well received across Aotearoa, with Proteins of Magic playing the support act for the 8 date 2022 National NZ Dimmer Tour, which was followed by her first headlining 8 date NZ tour in October 22, culminating with a show at The Others Way Festival.

“Sherrod doesn't just transform on stage, she almost seems possessed; this solitary, commanding presence at the keyboard, a bass guitar and flute within reach, a loop pedal at her feet creating hypnotic sounds that build to a pulsating crescendo.” Joanna Wane (Canvas Magazine)

2022 saw Proteins of Magic come into her own, with her single 'Lethal' being placed as Number 1 in the NZ Radioscope Alternative Charts, Number 1 in the SRN Top 10, and number 2 on the bFM Top 10. She played live sessions on RNZ and Radioactive, and was on the cover of New Zealand Herald’s Canvas Magazine

Proteins of Magic will be touring Aotearoa in February and March, before heading off to support William Crighton in the UK in April.
