Slow Fiction and the indie rock revival, post punk wonder of "Jericho"

"I will confess to nothing..."

Julia Vasallo from Brooklyn based Slow Fiction has an artful voice, one with urgency, one with a hard edge, the kind of hardness that feels drenched in a certain kind of tension. Not angst but the creative tension that comes from putting it all out there artistically. A two fisted approached to performing. I certainly feel that kind of passion on "Jericho", a jammy indie rocker with some retro vibes with tentacles that might reach into the kind of revival rock of artists like The Strokes or The Libertines or the halcyon days of 80's artists like The Pretenders or Garbage or The Cranberries.

"Jericho" begins strong right off the gate with drums that push not just follow and flail out amazing fills, a driving bass line that at times gets kind of mod like an amalgam of Pete Farndon, Paul McCartney and Bruce Foxton in their early years. The guitar work with rhythms that jam, get tremendously funky at times while not seeming funky. The synergy of the band is utterly mad, precise while feeling passionately raw.

Great band, great track. Slow Fiction's new eponymous EP is out now. Vocalist Julia Vasallo wrote this of their new release:

"These songs are a culmination of the past two years of our group’s coalescence. We’ve felt a need to explain ourselves in a larger context, and this is our first chance to do it. There are characters throughout the EP that every person has either related to, loved, or hated at some point in their lives. I’ve always loved the quote that 'good art should make you laugh and cry' but what about the feeling when you’re crying and laughing at the same time?"

Slow Fiction is a band from New York City. Influenced by the likes of poets like Anne Waldman, Ted Berrigan and the New York School era as well as the spirit of early 2000s garage rock bands such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, and The Walkmen, the group delivers a blend of their influences and personal experiences in a raw and memorable way.

Through Craigslist ads and mutual friends, the band first joined forces at Julia Vassallo’s East Village apartment. In what is now considered their first official band meeting, they sat in a circle with their guitars while Julia plucked out the bittersweet song “Brain Protection Agency”. Since that day, they’ve considered themselves a band. Their first demos were recorded live in May 2021, and launched the band into a summer and fall of playing shows throughout New York. These tracks serve as proof that even at an infantile stage, the members of Slow Fiction were meant to make music together. Slow Fiction’s first official studio releases are slated for early 2022.
