"you say I'm unstable, I think you're a flight risk, the reasons you gave me ever so tight lipped..."
The rattling up beat "drive your car" by Oddnesse, the guitar-pop project of songwriter and producer Rebeca Arango, against a surf punk beat and hyper kinetic music has Rebeca sing, "you say I'm unstable, I think you're a flight risk, the reasons you gave me ever so tight lipped..." and already I am leaning in. The layers of sound from the staccatto guitar lines and chord changes that dip down when you think they are going to rise make you smile while some of the lyrics might make that smile crooked just a wee bit.
Rebeca's vocal countenance is wonderful, wide eyed but wonky, open but acerbic. I listen to too much music which sometime results in my brain grasping at sonic straws and while listening to "drive your car" I, for whatever reason, thought of "Revelate" by The Frames (1996) and Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Diane" (1982) and The Drums' "I Can't Save Your Life" (2021) all at once. Maybe it is because oddnese here pulls from the well that seems to contain 60's torch song pop, early aughts surf punk, 80's new wave / power pop and even 90's emo dipped indie rock. Anyway I like the pastiche.
About the song press notey stuff from oddnese indicate:
[DRIVE YOUR CAR is a love song about logistics. (The logistics of love, if you will.) Differences in temperament that create distance and tension. Acts of reliability that reconnect. Aesthetically I think we found an interesting bridge between surf rock and pop punk, rooted in Los Angeles. It’s fun being in love even when it’s annoying.]
I think this will elevate any playlist of any sort. "drive your car" might stir up times and memories in your head, create sonic Proust moments that may make you dance, smile, lay in your melancholia, whatever... it is that kind of song.
