"You all talk about peace and love, but then all you wanna do is hurt me / A rope lying on the bedroom floor, oh, why do my friends desert me, me? / I'm just a sliver away, I'm just a sliver away..."
The jangle pop rhythms and blends of proto punk, folk indie, alt rock aesthetic of "Sliver", by the UK masked sonic provocateur known as Person, is the kind of song that makes me want to run down city streets with my arms flailing like a riot of one. Yeah, I know that would look pretty stupid but it fires those kind of cues in my brain still. Loving the chord shapes and throttling urgency. The vocal countenance here with it's manic stance and artful edges appeals to me as he spouts some lyrics that are curious, [You said "Hey, no, you shouldn't retreat, are you gonna come see me later?" / Spun out on a garbage heap with a face like sandpaper / No, I'm just a sliver away, 'cause I'm just a sliver away] There is a sense that these words might be improvised before being honed which is one of my favorite forms of songwriting.
In the end "Sliver" for whatever reason feels like an amalgam of (mostly 'the') artists like The Drums, The Tubes, The Talking Heads, Half Nelson and The Violent Femmes. So there.
