In the arms of "Lillian", the song that is, by Pennsylvania bred, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Quinn Devlin is a heavenly place to be. The folk garden rock beauty, wonderfully drawn, rustic like a vintage gate adorned with scalloped flowers, it feels like a story on old hardwood floors slow danced on in bare feet. As pedal steel guitar layers swell against piano chords, potent emotional bass and shuffling drums, Quinn sings somewhere between a city busker and the Grand Ole Opry. The vocal bounce and patter is inviting, it sways and Quinn has a way of constructing the lyrics in interesting, poetic ways. It is as if the words are on the rungs of a ladder with every 5th rung is spaced farther than the rest. It pulls you closer, because of the pregnant pause.
I am enamored with the sound here, the embracing feel of it all and maybe a 70's sense of folk country classicalism and no need to infuse it with the contemporary folk indie tropes of the day. It somehow feels more pure than that, genuine and beautifully moving, maybe a nod to those who came before like Townes Van Zandt, The Stone Poneys, Poco to name a few.
"Lillian" was co-produced with Sahil Ansari (JW Francis, Margaux, Reid Jenkins, Furrows) and featuring James Woodall on pedal steel and lap steel (JW Francis, TOLEDO, Libby Rodenbough), Jack Broza on electric guitar (Forager) Jordan Wolff on drums (GLOM, JW Francis) Andy Shimm (JW Francis) and Dylan DeFeo on piano plus some others on woodwinds and vox.
